“The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”–Nelson Mandela. The act of Overcoming Fear is not so easy. It comes with a lot of self-convictions, and hard work. Fear is one of those human emotions that send chills down your spine. That makes you so weak to your limbs. It consumes you and leaves you so helpless to your own fate. And if you allow it, in due time, its tentacles will penetrate through every fiber of you, and leave you to the shadow of yourself.
The word fear according to Oxford Dictionary it is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.
As humans, at one point in time or another, the spirit of fear tends to hold us back from achieving the things we should achieve. Almost everywhere you look, there are one or more things to make you afraid. To make you doubt yourself and your abilities. To make you cower and shiver like a chicken, which I understand, I have been there a couple of times, in which I doubt myself and the things I know I can do.
At the moment, I don’t know what your fears might be. If it might be the fear of failure. Or the fear of never finding happiness? Perhaps, it’s the fear of never finding your purpose? Could it be the fear of never being successful the way you want to be? Maybe it is the fear of not finding the right partner for yourself? Or is it the fear of the unknown? What are you so afraid of?
While I leave you pondering on the above, below are Practical ways of Overcoming Fear.
1. Acknowledge your fears
A lot of times, you are filled with the fear of doing a particular thing. But you tell yourself that you are not afraid. You give yourself excuses as to why you cannot do a particular thing. You blame it on perhaps your family background, or the economy of your country, or on you not having enough time. Whereas, a lot of times you are just so afraid of taking the first step. You need to stop blaming this, and that for reasons why you are not doing the things you need to do. And acknowledge that you are filled with fear. Therefore, acknowledging your fears would be a step towards you helping yourself to overcome your fears.
2. In overcoming your fears, you need to identify your fears.
After acknowledging your fears, the next thing to do is to identify your fears. As the saying goes, the only way to overcome any problem is to know that you have that problem. Hence, in overcoming your fears, you need to sit down and have a deep thought on what are your fears? When did you start feeling these fears? What triggers these fears? What do you need to do to overcome them? When you can honestly answer the above questions, then, it would make it easy for you in overcoming your fears.
3. Make up your mind to overcome your fears.
“Don’t let the fear of striking out hold you back.”–Babe Ruth.
Do not let your fears hold you back from being who you truly want to be. What is that thing you so desire? Is it to be a great writer someday? Stop being afraid, and overcome the fear of holding your inspiring and captivating words back in your head and in your mind. Put your thoughts out there either by creating a blog or by voicing out your opinions on platforms that relate to your amazing thoughts. You never can tell who would benefit from it if you keep holding on to those amazing thoughts. Do you desire to be a dancer, or a great chef, or a singer, or a great parent someday? If yes, then take a step today, by making up your mind that you would face your fears and in the process, you will overcome your fears.
4. Develop your mind on Positivity.
As the world is, it is very difficult to maintain a positive mindset every time. But it is a thing that, can be achieved if you put your mind to it. Hence, in overcoming your fear, one of the ways to also achieve this, is to saturate your mind with positive thoughts. Most especially in times, whereby the fear in you is reminding you of not being good enough. You need to tell yourself that you can do it, and you will. Do this as often as possible, and watch your fears cower instead of the other way around.

A lot of times, we are surrounded by folks who are just in our lives in order to bring us down, instead of raising us up. If you happen to find yourself surrounded by people such as these, whenever they want to channel words of fear into you? By telling you; You are going to fail at this, You are not good-looking enough, etc. Look them in the face, and tell them you will never know if you will succeed or fail if you don’t try. Therefore, by overcoming your fear, you need to face and prove anyone who ever doubted you wrong. Remember you can do, and be anything good you want to be.
6. Keep making a conscious effort to be better each day.
Just like anything else in the world, that requires you to put in the effort and hard work into becoming something or overcoming an obstacle, so also are you overcoming your fears. By overcoming your fear, you need to also make a conscious effort each day in practicing the above. Don’t do it today, and then wait until some weeks, or months later before making a conscious effort. Remember, do it each day, that way, you will gradually overcome your fears with time.
7. Say positive words of Affirmations to yourself daily.
It’s one thing to want to be something, and it’s another thing to utter negative words when things don’t go as you want them to at the moment. Therefore, in overcoming your fears, another practical step you can take is saying positive words of affirmations to yourself as often as you can repeatedly.
For instance, you can always tell yourself ;
- I am bold
- Fear has no place in my life
- Being fearless, and courageous is my way of life henceforth
- I take a positive step each day towards actualizing my dreams
- Things are working out for my good
- The lines are fallen unto pleasant places for me
- I have a beautiful life
- Being successful is my birthright
- Yes, good things are attracted to me now, and always
