Types Of Love In The Bible

The Bible tells us that God is love and that love is a fundamental part of human experience. From the moment we are born, we seek love in various forms.

The Greek language, used in the New Testament, offers four distinct words to describe different kinds of love: Eros, Storge, Philia, and Agape.

Each of these words captures a unique aspect of love, showing us the depth and breadth of this powerful emotion.

Types Of Love In The Bible

There are four types of love in the bible, and they are as follows.

1. Eros

Eros is the Greek word for romantic love. While the term itself is not in the Bible, its meaning is clear through many biblical examples.

Eros represents the passionate, romantic love between a man and a woman. The Bible shows us that romantic love is a gift from God, as seen in the story of Adam and Eve.

In Genesis 2:23, Adam expresses his deep affection for Eve, saying, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.”

The Song of Solomon is a beautiful example of eros love, celebrating the joy and intimacy of marriage.

It includes verses like Song of Solomon 1:15-16, where the couple praises each other’s beauty.

Although romantic love is powerful, the Bible teaches that it should be cherished and expressed within the boundaries of marriage.

When pursued correctly, eros love is a wonderful blessing from God.

2. Storge

Storge is the Greek word for familial love, the natural affection that family members have for each other.

This kind of love is not explicitly named in the Bible, but we see its essence throughout Scripture.

For example, Romans 12:10 encourages us to “be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love,” which reflects the deep bonds of family.

God’s love for us is described as storge love, illustrating how He views us as His children.

In 1 John 3:1, we are reminded of God’s incredible love: “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!”

This familial love shows God’s commitment and care for us, as described in Isaiah 49:15, where God promises never to forget us, even more so than a mother might forget her child.

3. Philia

Philia represents deep friendship and companionship. This type of love is by mutual support and loyalty.

One of the best examples of philia love is the friendship between David and Jonathan.

In 1 Samuel 18:1, it says, “The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

This bond of friendship is strong and enduring, offering support through both good and bad times.

Philia love is essential in Christian life, encouraging believers to care for one another deeply.

Jesus even said that love for each other would show others that we are His disciples, as stated in John 13:35: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”

4. Agape

Agape is the Greek word for the highest form of love, characterized by selflessness and sacrifice.

This love is unconditional and focused on the well-being of others. The Bible describes agape love as the very essence of God’s nature. In 1 John 4:8, it says, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

The ultimate example of agape love is in the sacrifice of Jesus. Romans 5:8 explains, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Agape love is not just about feelings but shows through actions. Jesus’ willingness to die for humanity exemplifies this divine love.

It is through this sacrificial love that we understand the true meaning of love, as described in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
